I am interested in this project. I just want to be clear on what you need, a logo or art? If it is an art design you are looking for what size?

Its art as a logo. Frankly, i'm not looking for something really simple to sit on the top of letterhead. I'd like something that looks like a matte painting, to serve as a logo. Does that make sense? I want it to be something that I can put as a homepage background or, onscreen, or at the top of stationary.

one of the submissions "framed" their work in a square... which i'm not married to, but sort of liked, because i want the "art" of the picture to be the focus.

It would really help if you could upload some of your 'look book' images (check the space where clients can upload logos etc).

Currently I am not clear on your brief... You would like a landscape which is geographically representative of a watershed (a mountain ridge between rivers?), and conceptually suggests a defining moment?

Realism in the sense of the french realist art painters? Such as Courbet, Manet?

Your look book images would really help convey what you are after :-)
