I'm trying to get a better idea of which direction to go with this.....
Would you like the logo to ultimately still retain that etched, vintage feel, or are you hoping to have it updated and more modern? Obviously you want to retain as many elements as possible from the original crest (the wall, the man on the wall, etc.) but do you want everything to be more polished and modern, or do you want it to still have that old feel, just incorporating the golf aspects you mentioned?

yes - old feel - traditional - basically the same but with some golf 'dressing' on top
