Recently News Corporation unveiled the new logo of it's entertainment and broadcast company, 21st Century Fox. Owner Rupert Murdoch says the logo "signals the promise of the 21st century." We're not convinced. Designers, let's help 21st Century Fox get a new logo that truly represents the company's "restless drive toward the future".
Background: When Rupert Murdoch announced that News Corporation would be split into two separate companies last year, it was clear that it was a only a matter of time before a new logo would eventually be unveiled. On May 9, Rupert Murdoch launched a new logo for 21st Century Fox, the parent company of well-known entertainment brands like FOX network, 20th Century FOX, FX, among dozens of other channels.
The new logo has been designed as a business to business brand mark that links together core brand elements from existing brand marks (FOX network, 20th Century FOX, FX etc) such as the moving spotlights.
Launching the new logo to his employees, Rurport Murdoch wrote:
“Today, I am proud to unveil our new logo, which serves as a powerful symbol of the inspiration and high bar set by our company. Like our name, the logo reflects the rich creative heritage of Twentieth Century Fox and signals the promise of the 21st century and our restless drive toward the future.”
“Ultimately, our new logo celebrates the powerful commitment of you and your colleagues to the excellence and innovation that will propel 21st Century Fox forward.”
Whilst the logo is designed exclusively to be a business to business mark, the design has stirred debate in the design community.
Design Taxi noted, "the new company logo is much like a minimalistic version of production studio 20th Century Fox’s logo."
Designers have also mentioned that the new logo is very similar to content production company Odyssey Creative’s brand mark. See http://odysseycreative.com/ to decide for yourself.
Others have criticised the design for too heavily referencing the “creative” Fox heritage of the 20th century and producing a design that looks like an “old telecom logo from the early 80's”.
We agree with Under Consideration’s review: ”the logo does its job. It just happens to do it in a rather underwhelming way.”
