Resumen de Diseño Con Ilustración
The project is to create a SINGLE cartoon illustration for the Home Page of my website. I have conceptualized some scenarios to be illustrated on the design. (Please refer to the instruction below).
The website is called 'Cook in Japan' and provides an English translation of the products sold in a local Japanese supermarket. The majority of the produce sold locally in Japan is labelled in Japanese.
The cartoon should convey the sense of bewilderment that foreigners feel when they visit a Japanese supermarket and also the relief when they see something familiar, e.g. a familiar fruit or vegetable, a label written in English.
The cartoon should illustrate a 3-4 shoppers experiencing situations that I expect most foreigners to Japan have experienced. I have uploaded (very amateurish) sketches of these. I do not expect the cartoon to contain all the scenarios below, however I would like scenarios 1-3 to be included. Please feel free to change the wording of the captions provided in my sketches to make them more witty and catchy! I have also uploaded some photos from a Japanese supermarket - if you would like more photos then please private message me.
Scenario 1: a shopper trying to figure out which packet is sugar and salt? (Sugar and salt are usually stocked next to each other in Japanese supermarkets.)
Scenario 2: a mum trying to buy items to bake a cake for the 'School Bake Sale' - she has managed to locate all the other items needed other than the Baking Soda.
Scenario 3: a shopper standing in front of a fridge full of various brands of milk and trying to figure out which one is full-fat milk.
Scenario 4: a mother trying to buy spinach for her baby's puree, but not being able to figure out which of the leafy green vegetables is spinach. And her relief that at least some vegetables are similar to her home country. (Spinach is usually kept with other Japanese Greens...spinach looks very similar to Japanese mustard spinach and some other Japanese greens).
Scenario 5: a shopper standing in front of shelves full of miso paste and trying to figure out which one to use to make miso soup for dinner that evening.
Scenario 6: a shopper standing in front of shelves of bottles labelled in Japanese and trying figure out which one is soy sauce.
Scenario 7: a shopper wishing to buy organic produce and not realising that he is standing in front of the organic produce section.
To give you some background: the website is still under construction and therefore the Home Page is currently blank. I plan for the Homepage to include:
- the logo
- cartoon illustration (this contest)
- section for people to subscribe to the website
- section for members to login
- a short description of the website as follows: 'Enjoy a fuller culinary experience during your stay in Japan by making the most of the local ingredients on offer. Create dishes with new flavours as well as your old favourite recipes. Click here to view an English translation of food items sold in your local supermarket.'
Here is a brief description of the attached photographs of a local Japanese supermarket.
