Resumen de Diseño de portada de libro
A book cover design for a first-time author. The book is being self-published, but needs to stand out as a quality product amongst a huge number of self-published titles hitting the market.
About the book
“Cracks in the Ceiling” is a collection of eleven fictional short stories, set in the the turbulent economic times of The Great Recession (Or the Global Financial Crisis). The stories are about ordinary people and their struggles and hopes, as they cope with the circumstances that are dealt them: losing their jobs and homes, helping friends in trouble, making their own success, having to move across town or across the world to survive, having to go back to work after losing their retirement savings.
The book is being published as an e-book only at this stage. The graphic will be viewed as an icon on the amazon kindle store (and similar stores such as Apple ibooks), and as a larger image on the book's own page. In future, the cover may be used in a print version.
I expect to be challenged and stimulated along the way as I don’t have a firm view of what the final cover will look like – it really is up to you to wow me. I value your time and as such I will commit to giving each designer feedback.
Required Deliverables
Although you need only submit the book cover at the design stage the required project deliverables are:
- Book Front Cover - colour. Main focus
- Other versions once finalised:
- Colour image image 928px wide by 1250px high, at 150ppi,
- B&W image 96ppi B/W, and it will resize automatically to 600px by 800px, which is perfect for the inside Kindle cover.
- 6 by 4 inch postcards and A4 posters for promotional purposes
- Final tag-line applied to all of the above
- Front, back and spine book cover design for future printing of physical book, size 5.25 inches by 8 inches. Amazon Createspace template available when number of pages has been finalised.
- At least 2 iterations of the winning design

- The cover needs to be edgy but not overdone. Less is more in this case. Think about the target audience and their tastes. I think the title gives lots of creative possibility, so please be creative and clever. I’d like people to look at the cover and think “Cool/Clever cover – I’d better read this”. Be original yet keep the end product accessible.
There will be a tag-line on the cover somewhere. Where you locate it is up to you, but you need to leave space for it. For the time being please use the text “Tales of Turbulent Times ” – but this may change by the end of the project.

- Please avoid clichés and being “overly busy”. Although the book is to be self published on a low budget it shouldn’t look like that. If the cover would look right on a popular mass fiction title then it is probably not right for me.
The design should not use a cliched "happy families" house image.
It needs not to look like it's based on a book cover template from a self-publishing house.
