Could you please clarify this: "Icons should be on transparent background where appropriate."?  Are you saying you want icons to have a transparent background? Or is that just an option? Also, can I use more than one color for the icons?  Thanks.

You can use multiple colors - Transparent background where appropriate means just that.  If you are doing a series of icons that are all squared up and need to lay them out on a background then you can use a background.  Transparent is more of a ''like to have'' based on the icons being used in a mobile application where users will be able to change their ''wallpaper'' independent of the application.
