Strange moles can be a sign of skin cancer. We are a cancer research lab that teaches people how to identify strange moles.

Unfortunately, existing educational materials are dated and not great examples of illustration/design. Examples of existing materials are attached to this brief.

As a first step to creating all new materials, we need better mole imagery. Research suggests that illustrations are the best way to teach abstract concepts, like identifying features of suspicious moles. Yet, existing educational materials often use photos, and available illustrations are not high quality or especially innovative.

We need illustrators who can think outside the box. We aren't looking for illustrators who can draw the most realistic moles (we have photos of moles already); we want illustrators who can help us visualize abstract features of suspicious moles, so we can teach people how to identify those features.

For this introductory task: Show us how you would visualize the ABCDEs of mole identification. The ABCDEs of mole identification asks people to look for moles that are (A)symmetrical, have irregular (B)orders, have multiple (C)olors, a (D)iameter greater than 6mm, and/or that are (E)volving. Existing educational materials often teach people the ABCDEs (using photos or poorly conceptualized illustrations). Show us how you would visualize the ABCDEs. It is an abstract framework, so perhaps you would use abstract visuals. Or maybe you have an artistic style that, in and of itself, conveys abstract elements. We are open to creative and original approaches. We don't have a particular idea in mind nor do we want you to conform to "what medical imagery looks like." If we invited you, then we saw something in your style that we loved. Heck, that's why we launched this project on DesignCrowd.

A good design will show us one illustration for each of the 5 ABCDE features (Asymmetry, Border, Color, Diameter, and Evolving). Illustrators can start by pitching us a design for one of these, and working from there, or showing us all 5. Whatever works best for you.

This is an open call where we hope to identify 3-5 innovative illustrators who will be invited to work on a series of paid illustration/design projects culminating in revolutionary skin cancer education materials. We anticipate that each illustrator will produce a unique final product, so that the cancer research community has multiple new designs to choose from and explore.

This project is funded by a 5 year grant from the National Institutes of Health (NIH).
