Hi Kyle,
Yes you are on the right track. Don't forget to use red and orange colours to give a burnt sky look. Also toxic waste barrels, skulls, etc in the foreground would be great.

Okay cool will be continuing this tonight! I know the contest is closed but if you could hold on a little longer I will submit my final (before amends) version tonight if u wanted to wait :) no worries if not!
