We have previously digitised a historical photographic magazine of around 20,000 printed pages and made it available online. The magazine ran up to the early 1970s, and the content is largely black and white photographs of local events, accompanied by short captions.
Although the content is very rich, the design needs to be revisited so that:
* it is visually appealing
* it is responsive (i.e. works in browsers across all manner of devices)
* is faithful to the nature of the content
There are only a few core page types, and the central one is the article page, an example of which can be seen at:
http://photonews.org.nz/gisborne/issue/GPN73_19600714/t1-body-d4.html
Any design submitted should be based on the treatment of an article page such as the above.
Given the large number of pages on our site, we need a design which can be templated to work for any content in the collection, i.e. we cannot hand-craft our templates to match a given page of content, rather a template must work acceptably well for all content.
The current site, although basic in design, has the advantage that it is quite efficient in the amount of data per page request (around 100k - 200k). While not adverse to web fonts, banner imagery etc, we will carefully consider the benefit gained from any such treatment against the amount of extra data that needs to be downloaded to the client's browser.
For the right design, we are able ourselves to adapt it to a CSS layout.
An example of each core page type is as follows (though for this project we only expect a design for a single page, as itemised above):

A general browsing audience of all ages, but skewed towards the older generations, and those interested in family / regional history.
The average user will not be particularly web-savy, and the treatment of the content should not detract / distract from the actual content itself.

- * it is visually appealing
The content should be visually appealing to the audience, which can be defined as a general browsing audience of all ages, but skewed towards the middle and older generations.
* it is responsive (the design can be adapted - by us - to work in browsers across all manner of devices)
* is faithful to the nature of the content
The magazine covers (http://photonews.org.nz/gisborne/issues/index.html) offer some possible inspiration for treatment of the material.
