Why the startling title for the book—Who Would Jesus Shoot? Utah is one of the few states that uses a firing squad to execute inmates.
The second reason for the book’s title is that Utah Mormons proclaim themselves God’s chosen custodians of “the one true church of Jesus Christ.” Jesus taught that his followers not to demand an eye for any eye, as the Old Testament required, but to “turn the other cheek” and show mercy, thereby breaking the cycle of violence. The title Who Would Jesus Shoot? thereby captures the moral tension between pre-Christian justice, i.e., the death of the killer, and the ideal of Christian mercy.
