Playing Card Faces

What type of feel are you going for? Something traditional? Something totally out of the box? Something 8-Bit or similar like the appended image?

Do you have any additional reference points or preferences to share?

Hello. Thanks for the inquiry.

I guess I'd call it "contemporary". Given that these are for a card game, I want the player to see the cards as modern while instantly recognizing them as playing cards. When you look at the faces on traditional cards, they usually have a "serious" look about them. I want these faces to be "friendly" and "familiar". If you look like the examples I sent. I believe that these have that quality. As for color, 24bit color is fine. Not looking for "old school" style for the video game.
Low on detail though is fine as the cards will probably get scaled at run time due to the player rotating their device from portrait to landscape. So if we have too fine of lines, they may disappear when downscaling.

As for additional points of reference. If you take any deck of cards, I guess they would show more about what they should "not" be rather than what they should be. The traditional face cards look like "old English royalty" (to me). Instead, I would like to see a younger twist (again friendly faces) but still the clothing, the crown, jewelry, etc. should hint that we are really looking at a "queen", a "king", a high ranking officer "jack". For the ace, a simple "family crest" to me is appropriate (like the example I sent). But if you had something creative in mind that spoke or communicated that this card is the "highest ranking" card it might be cool to see what you could come up with.

In the end, if it's really close to the examples I sent, that's ok too. We just need the cards to have an original look to help establish a "trademark" for this set of games.

Good luck. I'm looking forward to seeing your work!

I have another question...questions. :)
What sort of illustrative style do you like? Do you like the illustrations of traditional cards, sans the faces of course, or are you open to something totally out of the box in terms of style?

Thanks a lot for your communication.

Hello Lakija:
I looked at your profile on DesignCrowd. I like the way you describe your "style" as minimialist an clean. If I were to choose just one of those words to describe what I'm looking for I would lean toward "clean". I'd say, just "go for it". Looking at your portfolio, I believe that whatever you come up with (after taking into consideration my descriptions above) will be fitting for the project.

I encourage you to look at inthegrayroom.tumblr.com to get a better feel for my style. I have illustrated the queen already, and am making her hubby and the jack. I will show them to you soon. Cheers!
