I'm a writer who's preparing to self publish my first novel, *Project
Ex. *When the realization that she’s lived over half a century lights a
fire under Lydia Birnbaum’s rapidly aging but still shapely* tush, *she
decides it’s time to take a new approach to dating –one drawn from her
training as a psychotherapist. Determined to avoid the romantic
mistakes she’s made in the past, she launches an intriguing research
project on Facebook. When “Project Ex” (as in “ex-boyfriends”)
unexpectedly turns Lydia into Philadelphia’s radio relationship-guru
sensation, she attracts the attention of Jared Abrams, a jaded
food-critic-turned-investigative reporter who assumes a fake identity as
a new therapy client in an effort to unmask her as a fraud.
The category is women's commercial fiction; the genre is "hen lit" (or
boomer lit)-- i.e., women's fiction targeted for women in their 40s-60s.
I envision a whimsical cover in vivid colors -- fuchsia perhaps, with
accents of yellow, blue and/or green. Lydia Birnbaum should be depicted as a
mature, somewhat frazzled woman who is very attractive & shapely. One possibility for the design could be that she's seated at her computer -- which is positioned over the title, PROJECT EX --daydreaming about the responses she's received to her ad. I envision
thought bubbles over her head. One bubble reads: Barry M. -- Loser!
Another says: Josh S. -- Clooneyesque. Another bubble: Larry K. -- sweet
but bald. Silhouettes of middle-aged men waiting in line to talk to Lydia
bleed onto the back cover.
Since Lydia becomes a radio talk show host and leaps to local celebrity in the Philadelphia area where she lives, a second possibility for the cover design is that she is seated at a radio console, sending advice over the airwaves to the single people (mostly men) who call into her show. I'd love to see the silhouettes of men somewhere on the cover -- perhaps at the top or bottom? -- representing the many callers who seek her guidance.
Although there are some serious moments in Project Ex, it's mostly light-hearted and fun, and I'd like to convey that through use of whimsy, color scheme and type face.
Preferred color palette is whimsical, happy, and vivid. Please see attached photos as inspiration.
