I would like it to look as if the illustration has been created free-hand (even if it hasn't been), and as if it comes from a book that was written before the age of computers.

With the exception of the second one... none of those examples look either free-hand or pre-computer-era... :/

Yes, I think you're right, but the images can just be used as guide to the direction that the design could go in. I don't want to be too prescriptive.

I've started to work on this project but using a different aproach.
I will build a 3d model based on your brief and I'm sure I can control better the objects, the textures, the details and the mood of the final image. I think we can work together on this in order to achieve a good result. I will submit tommorow my first draft on this ( I hope the contest will not close).

1. size of the image ?
2. do we have to illustrate some background also like your references images and what would you like ? (forest, mountains, city , etc)
3. does it have to contain some character and how would it be? (male, female, old, young, mystic, scientific , etc)
