Hi there.
What is the meaning of LUMO?
What are the initials?

Q: Why LUMO?

A: Hi my name is Brian, and can answer this question as I am the team member that named the start-up. I felt that a four letter name would work well, since it could be easily scaled down to fit on the product or up for a poster at a trade show booth etc. The company is named after two people dear to me; my wife Lucy, and my aunt Ms. Morrissey who is a groomer and told us about her grooming idea for the first product. I took LU from Lucy, and MO from Morrissey. There is no deeper meaning to the name.

However, there is a serendipitous and happy ending to this story. My wife Lucy is from China, and when I told her the name, she said it sounds similar to the Chinese word for combing hair. Given our first product is a grooming tool for pets, we took it as a good omen.

Q: Why a circular graphic?

A: If you think about man made design, circles are less common. Buildings, tables, phones etc. all man-made objects are square/rectangular. Circles work well to attract attention, provide emphasis, and set things apart. This is what we intend to do with our brand. In addition, our first product is a grooming tool, which pays a lot of attention to geometry. It is very curvy, but built using simple arc curves in different planes. to make a unique 3D object, and one which is very ergonomic to use.

We also feel the circle is a good constraint, such that the designs we receive are very well contained. We then know that the designs could then be easily placed onto the products since the circle scales very well.

Designers please pay careful attention to the brief as some are missing the design requirements for the graphic portion of the logo. It should be circular. Distinctive. Include all colors green/white/black. It should be quite solid, such that the graphic can be easily formed on the product when the plastic components are injection molded (i.e. designs with a variety of color shades, or thin lines, would not be able to be branded into the product material very well).

Q: Why not guaranteed payment?

A: This is our first time using DesignCrowd and so we hesitated to commit to that as we didn''t know how well this would work for us. In addition, now the competition has launched, the initial designs we have received are quite varied to be honest, and a significant proportion simply do not meet the brief. We suspect some designers look at the company name and then jump straight into designing a logo, without fully reading the brief.

Cutting to the chase. We are designers too, and can recognize good quality, hard work. We hear the comments and will consider changing the project to guarantee the awards. We do not have any problem paying designers for their amazing work. Right now however, we feel that many designs submitted are not targeting the brief, leaving us with only a small few that we would mark for consideration.

We are going to review this at our next team meeting and get back to everyone with a response shortly.

Hi Designers,

Thanks for all the creative designs that are coming in! If you have any questions, do not hesitate to get in contact.

We need to revise a comment we previously made.

"We promise to NOT reject any design, as we respect each individuals creative take on our design. However, we will give feedback to all, especially in cases where the design has not met the brief, we will point that out as opposed to flatly rejecting it. Please take time to read the brief fully."

The trouble is, our design inbox has a variety of good and poor designs. Poor mainly because some designers have simply taken some of their previous work and modified the text to read LUMO, without trying to meet the brief requirements.

Therefore, we will continue to give feedback to every single design as promised, although to clean our inbox, we will have to start eliminating designs that we do not like because they have not followed the brief.

Our feedback is intended so that each designer has the opportunity to give this contest their best shot. We know making revisions involves work, but those designers who are willing to work with us stand a better chance of winning so we think that is fair.

If your design was eliminated, as we clean our inbox, that does not mean we do not like your work. WE would just like for you to re-read the brief, and re-submit a design.

We look forward to reviewing all the logos.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR PARTICIPATION DESIGNERS!

The LUMO Team
