The Friends of Bon Secour National Wildlife Refuge (NWR) is a non-profit organization which is made up of citizens from all over who cherish the refuge and are concerned about its future and the role it plays in preserving vital habitat types. Bon Secour NWR is just one of close to 550 National Wildlife Refuges found throughout the United States and managed under the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. The National Wildlife Refuge System manages lands in order to protect habitat for wildlife.
The Bon Secour NWR, located in Gulf Shores, Alabama, contains 7,000 acres of wildlife habitat for migratory birds, nesting sea turtles and the endangered Alabama beach mouse. The refuge was established by Congress in 1980 to preserve the coastal dune ecosystem, to protect threatened and endangered species, to provide compatible recreational opportunities, and to serve as a living laboratory for students and scientists.
